About
At the heart of education is the process of inquiry, and inquiry is best undertaken as a partnership.
I begin my biography with this statement because it was a partnership between me, my father and a Catholic order called the Salesians that defined me in every way.
I graduated from the universities of London and Manchester before beginning what I thought would be a career in teaching. I began by preparing students for their Oxford and Cambridge entrance examinations, but veered off course for thirty years.
I began a career in the hi-tech business after realizing that teaching was not going to pay the bills. I joined I.B.M. and eventually moved to the U.S.A. After some years working for other hi-tech companies I started my own software business.
After thirty years I left the business world and began teaching again; first at graduate schools of business and then back to my real love; in the public school system. At the same time I began to write.
My father encouraged me and, despite having left school at twelve, studied with me as I did my homework, eventually becoming as proficient a scholar as me. The priests encouraged me too; reminding me that it was not their job to teach me, it was my job to learn. And I did. And I have never stopped since.
Who educated me? Well, I did; with a lot of help. Students and children everywhere should be as fortunate as me. My work on this site is my way of trying to help others.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you
